WASHINGTON – The United States Mint announced today that it will begin selling the Chief Justice John Marshall Coin & Chronicles Set on July 18, 2005, at 12:00 noon (ET).

Priced at $59.95, the set includes a Chief Justice John Marshall Uncirculated Silver Dollar, an intaglio print of a statue of the Chief Justice produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and a booklet about Marshall written by the Supreme Court Historical Society. The product limit is 25,000 units, with a limit of 10 units per order and household. On August 1, 2005, if the product is still available, order limits will be lifted.

The proof and uncirculated versions of the Chief Justice John Marshall Silver Dollar, which went on sale May 4, are also still available for $39 and $35, respectively.

Public Law 108-290 authorizes a maximum mintage of 400,000 Chief Justice John Marshall Silver Dollars to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the birth of John Marshall, on September 24, 1755, and to pay tribute to his service to the Supreme Court of the United States and to our Nation.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each coin is authorized to be paid to the Supreme Court Historical Society. Both the proof and uncirculated versions of the coin are minted at the United States Mint at Philadelphia and carry the “P” mint mark.

Designed by United States Mint sculptor-engraver John Mercanti, the obverse of the Silver Dollar features a rendition of a portrait of John Marshall originally executed by French painter Charles-Balthazar-Julien Fevret de Saint-Memin in March 1808. The reverse, by United States Mint sculptor-engraver Donna Weaver, features a view of the Old Supreme Court Chamber, located inside the Capitol, on the side which houses the United States Senate. Construction on the original chamber, designed and built by Benjamin Henry Latrobe, began in November 1806.

The Chief Justice John Marshall Silver Dollar will also be part of the American Legacy Collection™ with the Marine Corps 230th Anniversary Silver Dollar, reminiscent of the Prestige Set previously offered by the United States Mint. Sales of the American Legacy Collection begin July 20, 2005, at 12:00 noon (ET). Please visit www.usmint.gov for ordering and limit information.
