The Treasurer, the Hon. Peter Costello MP, today helped launch a series of new coin releases from the Royal Australia Mint at a special gala event hosted by a prominent Canberran radio personality.

The event, which was staged as a mock-fashion parade, showcased a variety of new coin releases, including the Mint’s flagship product the Year Set, which commemorates the Year of the Surf Lifesaver in 2007.

Karla Gilbert, a member of Surf Lifesaving Hall of Fame, accompanied by two models attired in the well-recognised red and yellow uniforms of surf lifesavers, unveiled the Year sets, which feature special twenty cent and one dollar coin designs.

“It is fabulous that the Mint has chosen such a uniquely Australian theme. Surf Lifesaving plays such an active role in Australian culture, and these designs really reflect the important role of Surf Lifesaving over the past 100 years.” said the Treasurer.

Also released at the launch were the 2007 Masterpieces in Silver which features artwork from well known Australian artists Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, William Dobell, Margaret Preston and Grace Cossington Smith. A special feature in this year’s set is the coloured pad printing of Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri’s ‘Yuelamu Honey Ant Dreaming’. “The Mint is really excited about the inclusion of pad printed coins to our range this year. The beautiful colours have accentuated the fine artwork of the Mint’s designer/ sculptors and are a true reflection of the original artist’s vision. We are thrilled to have Margaret Olley present today, whose portrait appears on the William Dobell coin.” said Janine Murphy, Chief Executive Officer, Royal Australian Mint.

Ms. Murphy added, “We have also used pad printing in our Ocean Series, which really highlights the vibrant colours of the ocean and marine life featured. We are thrilled with the result.”

The coins that were launched included:

  • 2007 Year Set commemorating the Year of the Surf Life Saver (both proof and uncirculated);
  • 2007 Magic Pudding Baby Set (both proof and uncirculated);
  • 2007 Masterpieces in Silver;
  • 2007 Wedding Set;
  • Ocean Series (including coin designs of a Dolphin and the Eastern Clown Anemonefish); and
  • 2006 Christmas Medallion.

“Today we have released coins that will appeal to everyone.” said Ms. Murphy.
