1997 National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Silver Dollar
A Tribute to those Who Gave Their Lives
On October 15, 1991, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial was
dedicated at Judiciary Square, in Washington, D.C. Currently, the Memorial
bears the engraved names of more than 14,000 officers who gave their lives
in the line of duty (to learn more about this memorial, visit the National
Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund Web Site). Today, we honor this
Memorial, and the law enforcement community, with an exquisite offering
from the United States Mint.
About the Coin
The 1997 National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Silver Dollar is
the final United States Commemorative Coin to be minted this year.
Designed and sculpted by Alfred Maletsky, this Silver Dollar is unlike any
you've purchased before. Its design beautifully illustrates both the joy
of life and the sorrow when a life is taken too soon. These are also the
emotions many people experience during visits to the Memorial. It may be
hard to believe that so much history and emotion could be captured in a
single Silver Dollar, but once you have added it to your collection,
you'll realize that it has indeed been done.
Four Types of Packaging Available
Proof Silver Dollars that are struck multiple times with specially
polished dies and display a mirror-like background and a frosted image.
Uncirculated Silver Dollars that are struck with dies similar to those
that create our nation's circulating coinage and have a soft, satin-like
finish. The Insignia Set that contains a 1997 National Law Enforcement
Officers Memorial Proof Silver Dollar, a beautiful Memorial Cloisonné
Lapel Pin and an official embroidered Memorial Patch. Delivered in an
elegant, royal blue presentation case, Insignia Sets are perfect for
display, as gifts, or for personal remembrance. (The Memorial Patch,
designed by Mint Graphic Designer Jim Peed, will not be sold separately.)

Authorized Mintage
Not more than 500,000 silver dollar coins.
Surcharges
A portion of the proceeds from sale of each coin will be paid to the
Secretary of the Interior for maintenance of the National Law Enforcement
Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Designs Obverse design:
Depicts police officers as they make a rubbing of a fallen officers name.
Reverse design:
The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Emblem - a shield,
representing all law enforcement officers - uniformed, plain clothes,
city, state, and federal - and rose, emblematic of their dedication and
sacrifice, laying across the shield.

Mint Accepting Orders September 22; Delivery Begins December 15

Washington, D.C. -- Mint Director Philip N. Diehl joined National Law
Enforcement Memorial Fund Chairman Craig W. Floyd and Under Secretary of
the Treasury for Enforcement Raymond W. Kelly today to unveil the designs
for the National Law Enforcement Silver Dollar at the Memorial.
A special address was delivered by Diane Leonard, wife of U.S. Secret
Service Agent Donald R. Leonard, one of eight federal agents who lost
their lives in the bombing of the Federal Building in Oklahoma.
"This site has proven to be a particularly moving memorial to the
men and women who have sacrificed their lives to ensure the safety of
their fellow citizens," said Mint Director Diehl. "The National
Law Enforcement Memorial Silver Dollar marks our commitment to preserving
the memory, and supporting the mission, of those honored here."
The Mint announced that it will now begin accepting orders September 22
for the National Law Enforcement Official Memorial Silver Dollar, which
commemorates "the sacrifice of law enforcement officers and their
families in preserving public safety. . .," with delivery of the coin
scheduled to begin December 15. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of
the coin will go to supporting the long-term endowment fund to maintain
the Memorial.
The obverse of the coin, inspired by a photograph at the Memorial by
Larry Ruggeri, depicts United States Park Police officers Robert Chelsey
and Kelcy Stefansson as they make a rubbing of a fellow officer's name.
The reverse depicts the Memorial's emblem -- a shield, representing all
law enforcement officers, uniformed, plain clothes, city, state, and
federal -- and a rose, laying across the shield, a reminder of the
officers' dedication and sacrifice. Both the obverse and reverse were
executed by U.S. Mint Sculptor/Engraver Alfred Maletsky.
