George Washington Commemorative Coin

A giant of a man, both physically and historically, George Washington courageously led our nation to independence and then steered us through the first years as an incomparable leader. It was through his legacy that our nation not only survived but prospered. This new commemorative coin is destined to achieve numismatic importance as a stunning piece of art and as a lasting remembrance of our founding father.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the George Washington Commemorative coin are authorized by law to go to the Mount Vernon Ladies Association. This group has dedicated its resources to preserve and protect George Washington's home and to educate the American people about his legacy.

A special tribute to the life and legacy of America's first president...

In the George Washington Commemorative Coin, the United States has created a gold coin that exemplifies the epitome of both art and craftsmanship. The lustrous five-dollar gold coin, whose design was created some 68 years ago, features an artistically stunning, firm-jawed, right facing bust of Washington on the obverse, and a powerful bald eagle (design by Laura Gardin Fraser) with exquisitely detailed overlapping planes of rough feathers on the reverse.

The proof blanks were individually hand-fed onto presses fitted with specially polished dies, then struck at least twice for exceptional brilliance and unmatched detail. The completed coins were then given white-glove inspection by our artisans who assured each one met the Mint's exacting standards. Destined to be a centerpiece of any collection, the George Washington Commemorative Five-Dollar Gold Coin was issued in both uncirculated and proof versions. Both contain 90% gold and 10% alloy. This was the only gold commemorative coin issued by the U.S. Mint in 1999.
