Limited Edition of Up to 50,000 Sets Features Proof Silver Dollar And Handcrafted American Indian Pouch
WASHINGTON – The United States Mint today announced that the Lewis & Clark Coin & Pouch Set, featuring a proof Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Silver Dollar and a handcrafted American Indian Pouch, priced at $120, will be available September 7, 2004, beginning at noon (ET).
Due to the high demand anticipated for this product, the United States Mint has imposed a limit of 10 sets per order, and 50 sets per household, to ensure the widest possible distribution of this historic offering while still maintaining its limited mintage of up to 50,000 units. The same order limits were imposed on the Lewis and Clark Coinage and Currency Set, which sold out on May 18, 2004, after just six days on sale.
“This most anticipated product of 2004 recalls the distinctive heritage of this Nation,” said United States Mint Director Henrietta Holsman Fore. “It celebrates the exceptional bond between Lewis & Clark and the numerous tribes that sustained their expedition as it moved westward.”
Dr. Robert R. Archibald, President of the National Council of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial said, “Americans who purchase these coin and pouch sets will become stewards of a unique, handcrafted work of art commemorating tribal traditions and honoring ancestral contributions to the expedition.”
Cut, tanned and decorated by artisans who are descendants of some of the many American Indians encountered by Lewis and Clark, these pouches are each as individual as the tribes they represent. Of the up to 50,000 pouches produced, no two are exactly alike. Due to the unique design of the American Indian pouches, the United States Mint will randomly select one for each customer. Each set includes its own Certificate of Authenticity, hand-signed by the American Indian artisan who crafted it.
The pouches are being produced by 11 American Indian tribal nations and a portion of the proceeds from the sales of the Lewis & Clark Coin & Pouch Set will go to support American Indian language revitalization programs.
Designed by United States Mint sculptor/engraver Donna Weaver, the obverse of the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Silver Dollar depicts Captains Lewis and Clark on a stream bank planning another day of exploration. The reverse features two feathers to represent the many American Indian cultures touched by the Corps of Discovery. It also features a rendition of the Jefferson Peace Medals that were presented to American Indian nations during the expedition on behalf of President Jefferson, surrounded by 17 stars representing the number of states in the Union in 1804.
Customers can purchase the Lewis & Clark Coin & Pouch Set by using the United States Mint’s secure website, www.usmint.gov, or by calling 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). Hearing- and speech-impaired customers with TTY equipment may order by calling 1-888-321-MINT (6468). A shipping and handling fee of $4.95 per order will be added to all domestic orders.
The United States Mint’s standard return policy is in effect for this product: In order to return the product, all elements of the entire product must be included. However, due to the unique design of each pouch, if the product is returned, customers will not receive the same pouch in return, but another randomly selected pouch will be shipped. Customers returning this set are cautioned that replacement sets may not be available due to limited inventory.
