Mint’s First Numbered Set & Popular 4-Coin Format Are History

Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Mint today announced the sellout of the new Impressions of Liberty™ Set and the Four Coin Set of Proof Platinum American Eagles, which went on sale June 6. The Mint also announced a limit of one set per customer for the Impressions of Liberty™ Set, to ensure a fair chance for the maximum number of collectors to purchase the set.

“The great response to this new coinage removes any doubt about numismatic platinum coinage,” said Mint Director Philip N. Diehl, “and augurs well for the launch of the bullion platinum Eagle this fall.”

The Impressions of Liberty™ set, which is only being offered in 1997, is the first numbered set offered by the Mint and features one-ounce proof platinum, proof gold and proof silver American Eagles in a luxurious display case, including a Certificate of Authenticity personally signed by the Director of the Mint. The Impressions of Liberty™ Set was $1,499, and the Four Coin Set, featuring the one ounce, half-ounce, quarter-ounce, and tenth-ounce Proof Platinum Eagles in a handsome display case, was $1,350.

The obverse design of the .9995 proof platinum coin is Mint Sculptor/ Engraver’s John Mercanti’s “Portrait of Liberty,” and the reverse design is Mint Sculptor /Engraver Thomas D. Rogers Sr.’s “Eagle Soaring Above America,” which will only appear on the coins this year. The one-ounce carries a $100 face value; the half-ounce a $50 face value; the quarter-ounce a $25 face value, and the tenth-ounce a $10 face value.
