‘COINS’ System Integrates Financial, Manufacturing & Marketing Capabilities
Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Mint has chosen PeopleSoft. Inc., to provide the software for its new enterprise resource planning (‘ERP’) system called “COINS” (for Consolidated Information System). The software will integrate data from the Mint’s seven operational sites to enhance its finance, manufacturing, sales and distribution functions. “The COINS project is an operational milestone in the 200 year history of the U.S. Mint,” said Director Philip N. Diehl. “We are one of the first government agencies applying a state-of-the-art business enterprise system in the public sector. Over the next two years, COINS will be the most important reinvention initiative of the U.S. Mint.” The Mint will replace its computer and data systems with an enterprise-wide integrated system that coordinates financial, manufacturing, order processing and marketing functionalities, including sophisticated database management and analytical tools. The contract, including software, maintenance and implementation, is valued at $16.3 million. The system will give Mint managers immediate access to the most current, critical operating information, enabling the Mint to improve its operating efficiency, to provide accelerated responses to customer inquiries regarding the status of orders, and to know our customers better than ever before. Implementation of the system, containing all financial, order processing and significant manufacturing capabilities, is scheduled for completion by October 1, 1998, with the remaining manufacturing functionality and modifications following in 1999.
