WASHINGTON – The United States Mint is accepting applications for membership to the newly created Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) for two positions – a representative from the general public and a representative specially qualified in American history. The application deadline is May 23, 2003. The United States Mint will review all applications for membership and will forward its recommendations to the Secretary of the Treasury for appointment consideration.

On April 23, President Bush signed into law the “American 5-Cent Coin Design Continuity Act of 2003” (Public Law 108-15). The new law established the CCAC, which is to be composed of 11 members: one qualified in numismatic collection and curation; one qualified by his or her experience in the medallic arts or sculpture; one qualified by his or her education, training or experience in American history; one qualified by his or her education, training, or experience in numismatics; and three representing the interests of the general public. CCAC membership will also include four individuals recommended by the Senate and House leadership.

The CCAC advises the Secretary of the Treasury on themes and design proposals relating to circulating coinage, bullion coinage, commemorative coins and medals. The CCAC also makes commemorative coin recommendations to the Secretary and advises on the events, persons, or places to be commemorated, as well as on the mintage levels and proposed designs. The CCAC submits an annual report to Congress and the Secretary, describing its activities and providing recommendations.

Candidates who represent the interests of the general public should include their knowledge of history, youth interests, or an understanding of American culture and history. Those who believe they are qualified to serve as the specially qualified member in the field of American history should include specific skills, talents and credentials to support their applications.

Candidates who have demonstrated leadership skills, have received recognition by their peers in their field of interest, and possess a record of participation in public service or activities are also encouraged to apply.

Any member of the public wishing to be considered for membership on the CCAC should submit a resume, or letter describing qualifications for membership, by fax to 202-756-6539, or by mail to the United States Mint, 801 9th St., N.W., Washington, DC 20001, Attn: CCAC Membership. Submissions must be postmarked no later than May 23, 2003.

Individuals who have previously submitted applications for membership on the Citizens Commemorative Coin Advisory Committee (CCCAC), by the December 2, 2002, deadline, will be considered for the open positions on the CCAC and are not required to reapply. However, those with applications already on file may supplement their applications by the May 23, 2003 deadline.
