Gorrell Collection of Gem Flying Eagle & Indian Cents To Anchor FUN 2003

Press Release - October 23, 2002
Dallas, TX: An incredible collection of Gem Flying Eagle and Indian
Head Cents assembled by North Carolina collector Joseph P. Gorrell will be
anchoring Heritage’s Signature Sale taking place at the Jan. 2003
Orlando convention of the Florida United Numismatists. Mr. Gorrell’s
love affair with Indian Cents started as a youngster during the 1930s,
when he began pulling high quality coins out of circulation. He has
collected off and on ever since, but it wasn’t until 1995 that he
decided to complete both Mint State and Proof issues in Gem condition.
Although not formally registered as a PCGS Registry set, the quality level
of the Gorrell coins demands that Registry and Type collectors focus their
attention of these Gems. Mr. Gorrell’s collecting philosophy was fairly
simple: “Quality tells.”
“This collection is so important - and so eye-appealing - that we will
be issuing a special, full-color catalog for them at FUN,” noted HNAI
Director Bob Korver. Mr. Gorrell’s favorite coin is the 1856 Flying
Eagle Cent, “since that’s the one that started it all.” Among the
highlights that will attract specialists:
1858/7 Flying Eagle Cent, MS63 PCGS
1861 Indian Head Cent, MS68 PCGS
1864 Indian Head Cent, L on Ribbon PR 64 Red & Brown PCGS
1873
Indian Head Cent, Doubled Liberty, MS64 Brown NGC
The Gorrell Collection will be sold as part of Heritage’s official
auctions at the 2003 Florida United Numismatists Convention in Orlando. In
Orlando, Jan. 8-11, Heritage will have five separate catalogs (presented
by Heritage Numismatic Auctions, Heritage World Coin Auctions, and
Currency Auctions of America-Heritage).
“Our FUN auctions just get bigger and better every year,” noted
Heritage Co-Chairman Steve Ivy, “and 2003 rates to be astounding. In
addition to more catalogs and more lots, we also have more bidders than
ever before. Our on-line community now exceeds 64,000 members, and that
number could well reach 70,000 by January. The fine folks at FUN are
expecting their largest crown ever, so bidding competition could become
very intense, indeed. We attribute our growing demand for rare coins -
matched by our growing prices realized - to the ability of Heritage’s
exclusive Interactive Internet™ bidding system. Put all these factors
together in a HOT market, and then stand back and smile. Whether you
prefer to sell at an old-fashioned coin show, or even if you demand the
latest in Internet technologies, Heritage’s auctions give you the best
of all numismatic worlds.”
“The importance of the FUN venue,” noted Auction Director Bob Korver,
is demonstrated by the fresh consignments already on hand -- more than $10
million! In addition to the Gorrell Collection, Heritage’s FUN 2003
auction also includes: The Ashland City Collection of branch mint and
other U.S. gold; The Chicagoland Collection of Standing Liberty Quarters,
assembled by Hans Poetsch; The George Coyman Collection; The Philip
Kaufman Collection of Proof Seated Liberty Coinage, Part 3; The Ohio
Collection, Part 8; The St. Louis Collection; and The Robert Tarr, Sr.
Collection.”
The consignment deadline for the FUN Signature Sale is November 27. For
more information, please contact Consignment Director Leo Frese at
