(Mandeville, LA) -- A nationwide bounty hunt has been launched for the
missing, fifth specimen of the 1913 Liberty Head nickel. A reward of at
least $1 million is being offered by Bowers and Merena Galleries of
Mandeville, Louisiana (www.BowersandMerena.com) for the discovery and
purchase of the famous coin, last seen by collectors in the early 1960's.
"Bowers and Merena will pay at least $1 million to purchase the fifth
known 1913 Liberty nickel. In fact, we'll pay $10,000 just to be the first
to see it," said Paul Montgomery, President of Bowers and Merena.
The reward is in connection with Bowers and Merena's role as official
auctioneer for the American Numismatic Association World's Fair of Money®
convention in Baltimore this summer. Bowers and Merena is a division of
Collectors Universe, Inc. (NASDAQ: CLCT).
"We are prepared to promptly pay at least $1 million cash for the missing
1913 Liberty Head nickel. Or, the owner can consign it to one of our
auctions, and we will give a $1 million cash advance and guarantee on the
coin," Montgomery explained.
"After vanishing from the hobby more than 40 years ago, we’re not sure
what condition the missing coin is in today. Of course, we’ll pay
significantly more if it’s still well preserved."
The disappearance of the Reynolds specimen 1913 Liberty nickel is one of
the great mysteries of 20th century United States numismatics. Repeated
rumors that the coin was lost in a 1962 North Carolina car crash have been
proven false, but no one has conclusively explained the current whereabouts
of this historic coin.
"Bringing the missing, million dollar nickel out of hiding this year
would be a wonderful way to celebrate the coin’s 90th anniversary," said
Montgomery.
The Eliasberg specimen 1913 Liberty nickel, sold at an auction by Bowers
and Merena for $1.485 million in 1996, became the first rare coin to ever
break the million dollar mark.
