ADDS MORGAN AND PEACE DOLLAR
DATE SETS TO POPULAR SET REGISTRY PROGRAM
Back to the Coin News Index
(Newport Beach, CA) -- The Professional Coin Grading Service's Set Registry™
program now includes the opportunity for collectors to add Date Sets to the
online data base (www.pcgs.com). The first Date Set categories now
available are Morgan Dollar Circulation Strikes (1878 - 1921) and Peace
Dollar Circulation Strikes (1921 - 1935).
Additional U.S. coinage Date Set series will be added in the coming weeks.
"Prior to around 1900, many United States collectors assembled their coins
by year only, virtually ignoring mintmarks. That changed with the
publication of Augustus G. Heaton's landmark book in 1893, A Treatise on
the Coinage of the United States Branch Mints," explained Ron Guth,
PCGS Director of Numismatic Research.
"Collecting by coin date briefly gained popularity again in the 1960's and
'70's, especially with Morgan Dollars. The set would be considered
'complete' if all the dates were represented, regardless of which mint
produced a particular coin of a particular year."
"Recently, the tremendous growth of the PCGS Set Registry™ led to requests
by collectors to add Date Set categories," explained B.J. Searls, PCGS Set
Registry™ Manager. "The number of required coins for a complete Morgan
Dollar Date Set is 28; only 10 coins for the Peace Dollar Date Set. The
goal is to get one coin from each date in the finest possible condition."
The interactive PCGS Set Registry™ was established in 1997. The registry
ranks sets in order of grade point average, completion and overall rating.
There now are more than 12,300 sets registered, encompassing every major
U.S. coin series as well as Canadian, British, Euro and Philippines coinage.
PCGS is a division of Collectors Universe, Inc. (NASDAQ: CLCT).
