(Irvine, California) – The first major public sale of treasure recovered
from the S.S. Republic, including what is believed to be the finest known
1862 Liberty Eagle, will be conducted in Kansas City, Missouri, April 7 and
8, by Bowers and Merena, the official auctioneer of the 2005 American
Numismatic Association’s National Money Show™.

Recently recovered from
the S.S. Republic shipwreck and believed to be the finest known example,
this 1862 Liberty Eagle, graded NGC MS-64, is among the first Republic
treasure coins to be offered in a major public auction. The sale will be
conducted by Bowers and Merena, April 7 and 8, as the official auctioneer
for the ANA National Money Show in Kansas City. Photo: Bowers and Merena
The S.S. Republic portion of the sale will be presented in a separate
catalog during the final session of the three-part, two-day sale. It also
includes one of the finest known 1853/2 overdate Double Eagles. The Republic
sank in 1865 while sailing from New York City to New Orleans, and was
discovered in the summer of 2003.
“In addition to the eagerly-anticipated shipwreck treasure, several
fabulous collections will be anchoring this year’s ANA National Money Show
Auction, one of which is Part III of the Rod Sweet Collection,” said Bowers
and Merena President, Steve Deeds.
“Among other important rarities, this collection features several
high-quality early Mint, Proof, and Commemorative Sets. The 1834 Partial
Mint Set is complete for all minor and silver denominations, and it also
includes examples of the first-year Classic Quarter Eagle and Half Eagle.
There is also an 1846 Partial Mint Set, as well as an 1865 minor and
silver-coin Proof Set. Finally, the Rod Sweet 1915 Panama-Pacific
Commemorative Set is comprised of an example of each Panama-Pacific
Commemorative coin, an original leather presentation case, and an original
copper frame by Shreve & Co.”
Bowers and Merena Director of Numismatics, Jeff Ambio, stated: “The
Robert Moreno Collection in our April 2005 ANA National Money Show Auction
has been assembled by a collector who only pursued NGC and PCGS-certified
coins. Mr. Moreno hand-picked the coins himself, and many of the pieces in
his collection are high end or premium quality for the assigned grade.”
“The core of the Moreno Collection is three fabulous NGC Registry Sets.
The Proof Buffalo Nickel Set is currently ranked number one on the NGC
Registry, and the Business Strike Buffalo Nickel and Standing Liberty
Quarter Sets rank number two on the same registry. Also of note is the fact
that Mr. Moreno’s Business Strike Buffalo Nickel Set received a 2003 Best
Classic Set Award from NGC,” said Ambio.
“Specialists in the Lincoln Cent series, especially those assembling PCGS
Registry Sets, will delight in Bowers and Merena’s offering of the Los Altos
Collection,” continued Ambio. “This important collection is the finest PCGS-certified
set of 1934-1958 Lincoln Cents ever offered at auction, and it includes
numerous top-of-the-pop examples.”
“Our 2005 ANA National Money Show Auction includes two particularly
important offerings for gold collectors,” said Deeds. “The first is the High
River Collection, which specializes in high-grade and/or Condition Census
gold from the Southern branch mints at Charlotte and Dahlonega. The second
is our Treasures of the S.S. Republic Sale, which is being offered in a
separate catalog. The lovely Eagles and Double Eagle from the wreck of this
historic steamship are being offered at the start of Session Three.”
