Rarities Abound in Bowers and Merena’s Official March 2006 Baltimore Auction Colonials, Errors, and Rare-Date Gold Particularly Well Represented

Back to the Coin News Index

Irvine, CA: On March 16-17, Bowers and Merena will be traveling to Maryland to conduct the Official Auction of the Baltimore Coin and Currency Convention. The sale is scheduled for three sessions, and it will be conducted at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore (410-528-1234). Online bids are currently being accepted at the Bowers and Merena website, www.bowersandmerena.com, where one can also view all lots in the online catalog.

“The Baltimore Coin and Currency Convention is currently in its 34th year, and the show keeps getting bigger and better every year,” said Bowers and Merena President Steve Deeds. “In fact, the show has added 50% more bourse tables to take its place as one of the true ‘super-bourse’ conventions of the 21st century. We have seen strong consignor participation in our Official Auction of the March Convention, and one of the areas that has proved particularly popular is Colonial-era coinage.

We have several seldom-offered types and uncommonly high-grade pieces in this sale, including a St. Patrick Farthing in silver that PCGS has graded VF-30, a lovely Thick-Planchet London Elephant Token in PCGS MS-63 Brown, a rarely encountered pewter striking of the 1779 Rhode Island Ship Token graded PCGS AU-50, and a perhaps even rarer 1794 Talbot, Allum & Lee Cent/British Token Mule in PCGS MS-64 Brown. The reverse of the Talbot, Allum & Lee Cent Mule displays a stork design.”

Continued Deeds: “Collectors of popular U.S. Mint errors will also find numerous important bidding opportunities in our March 2006 Baltimore Auction. We have on hand a rare 1873 Doubled LIBERTY Indian Cent certified MS-64 Brown by PCGS, an elusive 1917 Doubled Die Obverse Lincoln Cent graded MS-65 Red at the same service, a top-of-the-pop 1955 Doubled Die Obverse Lincoln Cent in PCGS MS-65 Red, and a highly desirable 1916 Doubled Die Obverse Buffalo Nickel in problem-free, PCGS-certified AU-55 condition.”

“Our extensive offering of rare-date gold in the Official March 2006 Baltimore Auction includes two particularly memorable coins,” stated Jeff Ambio, Director of Numismatics for Bowers and Merena. “The first is a simply extraordinary PCGS MS-64 example of the key-date 1909-O Indian Half Eagle. This coin is definitely premium quality for the assigned grade, and it is the sharpest struck and most carefully preserved representative of the issue that we have offered in recent memory. The other is a 1921 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle in PCGS MS-62. This issue is the primary condition rarity among regular-issue, collectible deliveries of this type.”
