Collectors Universe News Alert -- PCGS arranges Indian Head Cents
"Showdown"
(Newport Beach, CA) -- It's not quite an Ol' West shootout, but
collectors and dealers can see a "showdown" involving three of
the finest known sets of Indian Head cents during the Long Beach Coin,
Stamp & Collectibles Expo, September 26 - 29.
The Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), a division of Collectors
Universe (NASDAQ: CLCT), is sponsoring a "Set Registry Showdown"
for the top three Indian Head cent collections listed in the popular
online PCGS Set Registry Program. All coins in these sets are in high
grade, Mint State condition and display full, original red color.
Participating in the showdown are the Ally Collection, the 2002
"Best of the Registry" award winner; the Richard Collection, and
the Stewart Blay Collection. These sets currently hold the number 1, 2,
and 3 positions in the PCGS Set Registry program.
"The Indian cents of 1859 to 1909 have long been one of the coin
market's most popular series," said PCGS President Richard
Montgomery.
"The Long Beach 'Showdown' will be the first time that three sets
of this magnitude are displayed together in head-to-head competition.
Everyone attending the show will be invited to examine the sets and
determine which one, in their opinion, rates the best."
Although the Ally Collection does not contain any "finest
known" coins, 13 pieces in the set are listed as "none graded
higher." The Richard Collection contains two coins where none have
been graded higher, 1891 and 1894, both PCGS MS66. The 1877 Indian Head
cent in the Blay set also is PCGS MS66, one of only six with that grade
and none higher.
The PCGS Set Registry was launched on the PCGS website (www.pcgs.com)
in February, 2001 as an online forum for collectors to list and build
their collections. The interactive Registry ranks sets in order of grade
point average, completion, and overall rating. Collectors enjoy
"friendly competition" for the top spots, and there now are more
than 3,700 sets registered encompassing every major U.S. coin series.
