Tonight, the Royal Australian Mint’s ’60th Anniversary of Peacekeeping’ coin, will be officially unveiled by the Minister of Veterans’ Affairs, the Hon. Bruce Billson MP at the Australian War Memorial in the presence of Janine Murphy, CEO of the Royal Australian Mint. This coin has been released to raise awareness of Australia’s ongoing commitment to international peacekeeping.
On the 14th of September 1947, four Australian ADF officers became the first ever peacekeepers when they were deployed to the Dutch East Indies under the UN Commission in Indonesia (UNCI). Since then, thousands of Australians has been involved in over fifty peacekeeping missions, risking their own lives to assist others who have been affected by conflict. This week marks the 60th anniversary of Peacekeeping.
The Royal Australian Mint ’60th Anniversary of Peacekeeping’ $1 uncirculated coin features the helping hands of Australia cradling the earth with an olive branch, and a white dove. These universal symbols reflect the accepted ideals of peace, freedom and Australia’s proud role in supporting them.
‘The Mint has worked closely with the Australian Peacekeeping Memorial Project (APMP) committee and the Australian War Memorial to develop this symbolic design’ said Janine Murphy, Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Australian Mint. ‘We hope that this coin raises awareness for the thousands of Australians who have served on peacekeeping missions around the world’ she continued.
The launch was part of the opening of the ‘Force for Good? 60 Years of Australian Peacekeeping 1947-2007′ conference held at the Australian War Memorial from 13-14 September 2007. During the conference, Royal Australian Mint ’60th Anniversary of Peacekeeping’ coins are on sale with a percentage of the profits going towards the APMP. The APMP committee is raising funds to build a memorial on ANZAC parade for the Australians who have served on peacekeeping missions.
